Time for a Little Rethinking

Day before yesterday I was lucky enough to still be in Granville Island Market when my former studio mate Carmen Craig-Martin drop by to say hello. I should have taken a picture of her but instead she took a picture of my table. I want to make some changes to my table so I will be out of the market until the beginning of June. That is not even a week must get cracking.

Colour Shift - Not WYSIWYG

I took this picture to remind me that when you are using translucent clay there is a significant colour shift between the raw clay and the cooked. The lighter coloured pieces pictured here are uncooked and the darker are the colour after baking. So that nice soft green that you think you are using might be brighter then bright when you are finished.

Production Work Bench

As much as I would like to make bowls all day, production calls. I really don't mind doing it because you never know when a new idea will ambush you. Besides it is form of meditation. At least the way I see it.

May Morning

I took this picture with my phone on the way to my studio a couple of days ago at 5:00 in the morning. It is just a back alley in Strathcona (the area of Vancouver where I live.) Nothing to recommend it but I love the colours. Some time the simplest things spur on creativity.

Old Cane Stew

Slowly I have been trying to get my studio into better order and that means getting rid of old canes that can no longer preform as they should. This is always hard when I think of how long it took to make all those canes in the first place, but it has to be done. So good bye all those birdy parts, you will no longer bend to my will  so you will be replaced with new more flexible canes.

1. Bird cane jumble.

2. Old canes embedded in a matrix of scrap clay.

3. Pounding the canes and scrap clay together to make a bird cane loaf.

4. Slicing the loaf  thin enough to go through the pasta machine easily.

5. Slices of bird cane loaf with a backing of scrape clay.

6. All become nice "new" scrape clay ready for another adventure.

There is really no such thing as waste class. Only clay that has to be reprogramed.

Paint Trick

I have given up trying to squeeze the last little bit out of plastic acrylic paint tubes. It dawned on me that you can cut the other end of the tube off and then just dip your brush in and use up every last bit of paint. As you work your way down the tube cut more of the it away until you get the last bits out of the cap end. If you need to store the tube before you are finished, just put it in a plastic bag. I have used a clothes pin to made the seal more secure. Someone must have been doing this for years but I ma glad that I thougt of it too,

Cooperative Bowling

These bowl were made co-cooperatively even thought one party does not know I made them.
A friend of mine decided to concentrate her creative activity in doll making and gave me a lot of her polymer clay and clay related tools. Some of the clay had been made into canes, many were to old to be brought back to life as canes but I chose a few to make some bowl.. I have wired them to hang on a wall, so NR if you are at Granville Island they are there for you as thanks for the all the clay and stuff.
This is also the First Saturday of the month so my studio is open to the public from 12 noon to 5:00 PM. If you are in the mood for snooping into artist studios come by and see me and my studio mate Ray Ophoff. You can check out the First Saturday web site for more open artist studios.

Our Studio is at 884 East Georgia. Only difference is the front of the building is bright green now. We are in the back of the building with the gate open and the coffee pot on. We can let you in the front too. There will be a phone number for that posted there.
